Nice informative post you have written there. I find Spybot search and destroy to be good at spyware removal, its free and can imunise your pc before it dets infected.

I totally agree with you. There seems to be a huge difference in price between ftp storage providers and web hosts, and almost every web host states in their TOS that you cannot use the service to backup files from your PC.
There are some notable exceptions but they all suffer from a fatal flaw. For example, Onlinestoragesolution offers unlimited ftp storage for $19 a year, but it is extremely unreliable- google it and you’ll see numerous people who’ve had accounts deleted at random. There’s also ‘Livedrive’ which now offers unlimited ftp access, but it is SSLLOOWWW….download speeds are about 1/4 of what you would expect from a regular web host.
Basically there is a niche in the market which no company seems to be recognizing!! There are plenty of ‘power users’ who need more than the 15gb offered by Boxnet.

it´s just incredible how windows does not have this feature build in!

if you´re just a little more organized than a laundry bin, you should not be able to live without TBS…

@bruno : Sorry I don’t have any pointers for you. All I can tell you is I’ve upgraded to vmware workstation 6 with a ubuntu 7.10 guest and the tools seem to install with no problems (needing no additional patches).

Using the patch provided at http://asargent.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2006/06/patch.txt however can’t be applied on the vmware-config-tools.pl script provided with VMWare tools 3.0.1. Anybody suggestions?

Exactly! Rather get a no domain hosting plan then to get these online storage. I too understand that online storage make it easier. But with FTP, I dun quite like their ways of accessing. Geeks will have better ways.

You can do this. Search VMWare’s support for VNC. Simple mods to the vmware config file:

RemoteDisplay.vnc.enabled = TRUE
RemoteDisplay.vnc.port = 9200
RemoteDisplay.vnc.password = passw0rd

Good solution, but way too complicated. I just cut my taskbar up with a scissors, reordered it and put it back together with crazy glue. Computer won’t seem to turn on, but once it does this should work like a charm.

the last step crashed my x server (Lastly, you can edit your config to use the vmware mouse:

perl -p -i.bak -e ’s/\”mouse\”/\”vmmouse\”/’ /etc/X11/xorg.conf)

i skipped that and it seems to work ok with my mouse

the vmware tools any update 1 tar has been moved to : http://knihovny.cvut.cz/ftp/pub/vmware/obsolete/

there is a update2 tar in http://knihovny.cvut.cz/ftp/pub/vmware/

Thanks for putting this up. Life is much better now that I have more real estate. I wanted to also let you know that I found this to work on a Fedora Core 5 install as well, that was having the same issue.

I just wanted to says thanks for providing this guide. I’ve been struggling with getting Vmware Tools installed for a few weeks now and every other guide that i’ve used left me scratching my head. Yours has me running tools without a problem.

My only suggestion would be to put in the restart X commands that are needed to get the tools to work (if it is actually needed). I just used:
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
-then-
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start
